GOBSMACKED — Moments like these are why I stand at shore's edge, in the ditch, on and the escarpments for so many nights. Above all, sunsets and sunrises over water are my favourite. The way the water amplifies the colour and light is gorgeous. And when the water is just calm enough, you are left with either a glass mirror effect or a sea of gentle ripples that feel more like something tactile than a disturbance. An important factor to getting the most out of sunsets is shooting at the lowest native (not extended) ISO you have. Usually this is ISO 100. Occasionally, such as on the Nikon Z8, it is ISO64. This increases the dynamic range which in turn results in wider tonality, lower noise and better perceived colour depth.https://www.dougf.ca

FRIES ON THE GOLF COURSE — During the charity golf tournament this week they had a guy with a large homemade deep fryer set up at one of the holes. Hand cut. Double fried fresh on the spot. They were so good. Obviously as the light was good and the food was even better, I had to grab the phone out of my pocket and immortalize the moment. Shot on iPhone in RAW format. What a gorgeous night. The million mosquitoes were humming in unison as we were kept busy making their acquaintances. The air was so moist and warm that our gear was wet to the touch. Yet, in those moments of distraction, nothing could top the feeling of absolutely silence in this dark zone — and then the Milky Way to revealed itself in the darkened sky. Beautiful. The wonder of the universe becomes real every night when we can see the true vastness of what surrounds.To showcase the night, I used a 3 frame HDR technique. Two 15 second exposures at ISO 2000 stacked to remove noise and bring out the night sky along with a third exposure at ISO 2000 for 30 seconds to reveal the landscape.
