the disappearance of music from the 2005-2017 era is an imminent cultural lossa significant portion of the music created between 2005 and 2017 is quietly disappearing. this music, born in a digitally dominated era, lacked significant physical backup and is now on the brink of being lost forever.tracks that defined the underground scene, from fidget house to the early experiments of dubstep, future bass, and genres like vaporwave or underground trap, are vanishing. names like bird peterson, sharooz, or don rimini are almost impossible to trace. even mainstream figures of that time have works forgotten in repositories like soulseek or the internet archive, usually in low quality and poorly tagged. even names like skrillex aren’t safe: edits, remixes, and rare tracks from that era are quickly disappearing.@soundcloud, one of the epicenters of this digital musical revolution, has faced financial problems since 2017, and although it remains active, its user base and relevance have significantly declined compared to platforms like spotify, apple music, and tiktok. if soundcloud collapses, an immense amount of music will disappear with it.spotify, while seemingly untouchable, has a fragile model: the cost of licenses and storage is growing faster than its revenue, and its algorithmic focus has sidelined independent artists.@bandcamp faces an extremely uncertain future after its acquisition by epic games. in fact, i believe bandcamp will not survive beyond this year or next at the latest. layoffs and internal tensions have already shown it doesn’t fit epic’s commercial strategy, and its disappearance would be a devastating blow to independent music.the digital music of this era lacks physical support, such as vinyl or cds, making it extremely vulnerable. centralized platforms like soundcloud or spotify depend on servers that, if they fail, could erase millions of songs in an instant, as happened with myspace in 2019 when millions of songs and photos were irretrievably lost. one server hack, and it’s goodbye.it’s urgent to rethink how we preserve our cultural memory. beyond on-chain solutions like blockchain or ipfs, we could also turn to non-proprietary distributed archive models, where decentralized communities create open repositories of music supported by multiple independent nodes.physical-digital archiving tools, such as printing metadata on long-lasting analog media like permanent optical discs or magnetic archive tapes—or even quartz or crystal storage, though sadly, this tech is still unknown to many—could complement these efforts. the development of public digital libraries backed by international funding could also provide a more robust alternative, though i highly doubt government interest in such an initiative.this isn’t just about nostalgia but about protecting a crucial era in the history of music so that future generations can understand its impact. digital is ephemeral; if we don’t act, we will permanently lose these fundamental chapters of our musical culture.
