Onfim, a young boy who lived in Novgorod (modern-day Russia) during the 13th century, left behind drawings and writings on birch bark. These birch bark manuscripts, called beresty, were preserved in the soil due to the area’s unique conditions. Onfim’s sketches include drawings of people, animals, knights, and even self-portraits where he imagined himself as a warrior. Alongside these, he also practiced writing in Old Church Slavonic.His work provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the life and imagination of a medieval child.
