An appeals court in the US has formalised the seizure of 69,370 BTC (~$3bn) belonging to the closed Silk Road darknet marketplace.The decision also applies to an equivalent number of Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin SV and Bitcoin Gold forks.The Instance affirmed the original judgement issued in August.Among the plaintiffs in the ruling is the United States government, while the defendant is Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, who is serving two life sentences.The U.S. Department of Justice seized the assets in November 2020. At the time, the value of the coins was approximately $1bn.According to court documents, authorities gained control of the funds from a person going by the alias Invididual X, who hacked Silk Road and stole the assets. They were withdrawn from the darknet marketplace on 6 May 2012.Recall, according to analysts, the U.S. government is one of the largest holders of bitcoin. As of October, the authorities controlled 194,188 BTC.
